RD1 shopping in Tokyo

G'day,

Tomorrow morning I fly to an adventure in Tokyo, tracking down an RD1, among other things. I have a list of shops selling new and used gear, and a checklist for the camera itself. This forum and Reid Reviews supplied most of the poop to make me an informed shopper. I really appreciate these quality resources and admire the talent and effort being poured into them. Thanks guys.

Will continue this post in two weeks with a review of the experience. I'm taking the "old" Oly E1 for 100mm length (50mm f2 Digital lens), and the Zeiss 25mm Biogon ZM for the potential new RD1. The shopping list includes a Pana LX1, for my partner, which adds to the fun.

See ya in a couple of weeks.

G'day,

Picked up an RD1 in Tokyo. What a camera, it's a blast to use M lenses and a Rangefinder - free from the film process.

Map Camera in Shinjuku is treasure trove of new and used equipment with departments for each brand. The Epson is on a floor with Oly E series and used digitals. Every spare nook is filled with some sort of gear (very distracting). Not much English is spoken or understood so an internet language translator was used a lot.

RD1 tax free is 171,000 Yen, about US$1,530.
RD1s is 249,000 Yen, about US$2,220.

For warranty it must be returned to Tokyo. This process was explained and I don't have a problem with it. There's a minor amount of vertical rangefinder adjustment needed, which I've got the instructions for, but it doesn't cause any anguish when shooting. I checked two bodies, they were the both out. There's one odd pixel showing up as blue at all ISO levels. Didn't notice it in the shop.

To stir the rumour pot, I checked out the RD1s in a couple of shops. I couldn't find a serial number on the body. The hot shoe is not engraved, there's nothing on the bottom label, or visible anywhere else. Maybe (rumour time), as sugessted elsewhere, this model is the remainder of the 10 thousand production run, disguised by removing the serial number???

The serial number of my RD1 is 5138.

I bought my first R-D1 from that same shop (unless it has moved), since I couldn't buy one in Australia. That was around 14 months ago. It hasn't had any problems except the rangefinder needing adjustment.

As you say, lots of distracting stuff everywhere in Map Camera.

Cool! Yours is the first camera I've heard of with serial number over 5000.
