I received the following email from Arax this morning:

Unfortunately we no longer offer the polishing and recoating service.
Arsenal factory in Kiev sold all machines which works with optics.

Sincerely
Gevorg Vartanyan,

That's sad news for some of us, because the service was very inexpensive, even though there was the long delay of a round trip to the Ukraine.
Now I wonder if that means that production of the lenses that I believe were made at that facility, like the fabulous 30mm 2.8 MF, will be also stopped. The loss of the lens mentioned is bad news for MF users, as this was available in a wide variety of mounts, was excellent in quality, and ridiculously cheap. It will hold its own with the Hassy lens which is in the thousands, and I paid less than $200 for mine.... That particular lens was designed and originally produced for military use. The factory, I believe, still manufactures the K88 and K60 cameras. I personally own one of the early Arax K64's and enjoy using this "Pentax on Steroids". The whole Arsenal operation may be in jeapody, with the demise of the film camera industry. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out....

Bad news indeed :(

(BTW, I wonder who bought the Arsenal machinery - not that it really matters, since they will surely NOT be offering the services we're interested in....)

It is a pity that Gevorg is no longer available to do this work. There are alternatives for recoating but Arax did very good work at an unbelievable price.
