Living in Ireland, and will be heading away somewhere in Europe for a week around New Years (Dec. 27th-through-Jan. 4th).

Nothing has been booked yet, and wonder what do people recommend for that time of year. Paris and Berlin are under consideration, but more from a fondness of both cities, rather than knowing what they might be like at that time of year.

Any and all recommendations welcome! :)

Any ski resort but for a beautiful mountain village with absolutely stunning scenery then it has to be Zermatt in Switzerland.

Warning!!! The French like fireworks and sell them in abundance to anyone. Does make for a spectacle at midnight though.

Praha, book a restaurant in the Kampa Island, just under the Charles bridge..
You'll have a quiet and pleasant staying while having a wonderful view of the fireworks and of the bridge (that will be very crowded).

I had one of the nicest New Years in Amsterdam. Berlin is very, very quiet around that time of the year.

Berlin. Cheap and very nice. Photogenic as well. Lots of street life and graffiti.

Ive done New Years in Berlin four times now and I always had an amazing time. Highly recommended. Aside from the party you'll never want for something to do or see and it's also one of the best places for photography IMHO. Cheers.

I'd recommend Moscow. I'm sure its not like other usual suspects but its also the least photographed of all major European cities.

Some interesting recommendations, keep them coming :)

Unfortunately not a skiing person, but I can see the appeal of somewhere mountainous. Nice to see Paris and Berlin might not be bad suggestions, although some difference of opinion on the latter it seems.

Scotland sounds like it would be quite nice, and Russia sounds like a very interesting suggestion, and for some reason I had not considered Amsterdam, somewhere I have some great memories of..

Praha was on my list, and somewhere I imagine is probably a little mindblowing at most times of year, let alone the turn of the New Year

Zermatt is one of the few mountain resorts that are really non skier friendly in the height of the ski season. For a short break of maybe 3 to 5 days there is plenty to do. A very large amount of mountain restaurants are accessible via mountain railway or cable car and a short walk. The mountaineering museum, "Wellness" facilities all over the place or just sit in the sun at altitude and get a tan whilst viewing the Matterhorn and sipping a beer or two.
Not that I'm biased or anything only having been there at least half a dozen times. ;)

hi, forget Paris!
Italy "La Spezia" was the most wonderful /crazy new year eve i have spend...If you like fireworks!

If you're determined to stay in Europe, go somewhere cold. At that time of year, most of southern Europe is just shivering and waiting for winter to be over: winters aren't long enough or cold enough to be dangerous, so they try to ignore them and hope they will go away.

Alternatively, consider India. Wonderful at Chrismas!

Cheers,

R.

Lol, I spend quite some time already hoping the Irish winter will go away. As used to cold weather at winter time as I am though, I do have my limits, and can still feel the icy temperatures of a November weekend spent in Vienna a few years back. A snowy Vienna is quite a picturesque site though :)

Budget restraints will rule out anything other than a relatively short hop in Europe I suspect.

Hogmanay sounds like a wild idea, and something worth a second thought I think. La Spezia sounds like an interesting idea, although with friends from southern Italy, I would never get away with going to Italy without dropping in on them.

my favorites in order ...

my favorites in order ...

Paris
Rome
Amsterdam ...

Paris in 1999 to 2000 only could have been better if Prince was there

Rome ... Fist new years with my wife! ( at the time Girl Friend) explored the Italian tradition of women buying red lingerie to start out the new year :p

Amsterdam I was there several times to start the new year. Cheap Chinese food up by the port, and hanging around the red light, lots of fun for the younger set, I did kind of grow out of it though. Often had to borrow a coat from my Dutch friends as I was working in the desert at the time.
