which is better to stay with the orginal type covering or can one use something like Camera Leather covering called Restoration Black leather and still maintain its value and Cosmetic look ! Thanks folks
Most of these cameras have been used to the extent that they are no longer collectible. Their worth is as a user so I'd go with a new skin from Aki-Asahi. I've bought several from him..
If you want something different from the original, go with a covering from Cameraleather. I like their Levant Black. If you want something that looks very much like the original, go with the 4040 from Aki Asahi (the 4008 also looks nice).
I sent my IIIf to Morgan Sparks at CameraLeather.Com in Vermont (as mentioned by you and Rick Beckrich, above) a few years back and had the job done by Camera Leather, rather then buying a leather cover from them and trying to do it myself. Don't remember the price, but the job was done perfectly and the camera looks beautiful. Also have sent a IIIg off to Peter Grisaffi at Camera Repairs and Restoration, Luton , England - www.angelfire.com/biz/Leica (as mentioned by Stewart McBride above) who put a real replacement Vulcanite cover on it. Depending on the condition of the rest of the body (chrome, wear, etc.) that might be more than you want for the IIIa. The vulcanite is a perfect replica of the original though. Cost is about 95 pounds Sterling, plus shipping of the camera both ways.
Good luck with the IIIa! I have one of them since 1968, still working perfectly. One can never have too many Barnacks?
