Hi everyone,
I need to get a shade for my 35mm Summicron (ver 3).
I was wondering if the rectangular hood (for the current and ver 4 Summicrons) will fit on my lens? Would you recommend this shade over the circular one?
Thanks!

The round ones work fine. The rectangular shades need a lens that will keep them in correct orientation

Thanks Al. I shall get a round one then.

Try to get a 12585. It's deeper than the 12504. The 12585 shades made after the introduction of the 12504 don't list the 35/2 on them while the 12585 doesn't list the 35/1.4 on it. Confusing, huh?
The 12504 also seems to get bent out of round more easily, but it's easier to bend back, sort of, with just your fingers. Obviously my shades aren't suitable for collectors.

I think I understand.
I will take a look at both and if I don't like either, I might go commando (no shade) :>
Thanks!

The advantage of the 12504 is that you can put a 49mm/Series VII filter in it. The cheapest fitting Leica hood is 12538, plastic (more shock resistant) but just as functional.

Does anyone know of a good way to secure the rectangular ones so that they don't rotate on lenses that do not have the notch? I would really really want to use the rectangular hood on my 35mm F2.8 Summaron, but the rotation annoys me.

Starless, don't go commando unless you're one of those folks who's always popping the cap back on between shots. A clear filter doesn't do much except increase flare. There's a reason the front edge of hoods wear through from black to bright aluminum and lose their roundness. Better the hood than the front element.
hunghang, not that I know of other than custom machining, or perhaps epoxy glue...LOL
