Today is the anniversary of the passing of my all-time favourite American, and hero of my youth, bandleader and best drummer the world has ever seen - Bernard 'Buddy' Rich. As a young club and rock band drummer in the sixties, I met Buddy at Ronnie Scott's club in Soho, on one of his regular annual visits to the UK. In an audience of mostly musicians and especially drummers, I would sit mesmerised by his powerful, fast, and technically brilliant performances.
A total showman, a few have come close - but none have equalled his skillful rythm and bandleading. If you like big band swing and jazz, listen to the Rich band 'West side story' medley, it still blows me away! :)

Ah well!....I guess not so many like big band swing these days - but the walls of my workshop have been shaking this morning! :D
