thanks, had a great phone conversation with him and felt comfortable with him.... we'll see soon enough how this camera works for me.... might put a polaroid back and shoot some fuji instant film, or might set up an area to do the 4x5 film, might even get a rollfilm back and go to town.... who knows...

got this email back from Frank Marshman today:
Here's the scoop on the Graflex.
The bed rack is bent, the guides are broken, the back guides are broken, the rangefinder slide is bent, the shutter is frozen due to old lubricant, the viewfinder is dirty...Other than that this is a nice camera!
I have a camera for parts, the rack and guides are good which is the most difficult part to find any more.
Total cost of this repair is $190.

I'm good with that

I think this is longer than 10 characters?

Check with Igor Camera, and Campus Camera, Kent, Ohio
Ask for Igor or Danny, depending on which you call, Igor has a web page.
There are a lot of Crown Graphics in Ohio that still should be a very good buy for about what you are quoted, or less, IMO. If I could find one of mine, it would be in that price range. Sometimes you get lucky with the lens-- have seen Schneider lenses, and one had a Linhof lens fitted to a Graflex board-- that was a very good day for the guy who bought it.
At the camera shows, it used to be, one in the big wooden case in GWC would walk in , probably with holders, etc. and hopefully no lead in the tripod compartment.
At the newspaper, as a joke, some of the photographers stole some half column lead bases, and put one in a guy's tripod compartment from time to time, which no one used, and the poor guy was hauling around lbs. of lead, until the handle actually broke when he picked it up. They worked up to a lot of lead, day by day--
Cruel, but funny--
Good luck.

What is interesting about Igor, is his true passion for photography, equipment, and all things mechanical, -- watches, etc. He also has helped when parts come available, repairing items himself, and providing help to the guys who fix our stuff.
He has good hands and patience-- and yes, he has become a good friend, but his passion for stereo photography, all the older cameras, collecting cameras-- I had better stop, he is also quite modest.
His web page is old school, and his eye and descriptions dead on-- he works very hard, so don't ask for a lot of photos of well described gear-- just does not have the time.
He does not read much here, so I will not have to hear about this post. ;-)
Danny, I have known him, and his dad, for a very long time. The late Al Banones was learning LTM repair in the days when I worked at the old store. Danny was in "short pants" then.
Danny is another of those you want to deal with-- his old camera inventory is smaller, but they have customers still coming in to trade in stuff they bought from the old store in the 50's. and he is 100% straight forward and honest. I have seen people bring in Rolleis, still in the original box-- and hardly used, and other stuff.
Back on point, I have no idea why Graphics here in Ohio are generally under priced, I just missed (like I need another) a Crown in 9+ with a Schneider at a give away price. I have given three to colleagues in Seattle, and Prague-- they needed a great home, and well, one was a great model and photographer-- the other a dealer and good guy at Skoda Foto. I gave away my last 6x9 roll film adapter, but am pretty sure they will surface.
Regards, John
