18 months ago I dropped my M2, the prism in the RF both separated and a few shards of glass broke off. My M2 was CLA'ed but has been inoperable since then. Because of the glass shards there's IMO no point in having the prism re-assmebled and repaired.

Leica says there are no pre-M6 parts available. I haven't found any RF assemblies on the used market. Is there any way to resolve this? Is a retrofit of an M4 or M6 RF possible?

What a shame. Sorry to hear about your problem.

OK... It is possible to retrofit a rangefinder from an M6 into your M2 but by the cost would be prohibitive.
Even if someone other than Leica did the work it would still cost a bundle.
Maybe one of the independent repairers could help you out???
I'm sure someone like Sherry would have some spares for an M2.

Maybe you should just save up and buy another good M2. :(
And keep the one you have for spares.

thanks!
I sent Will van Manen an e-mail
I phoned CRR Luton, re-silvering and re-assembling would cost 145 gbp. replacement prisms cost 225 and 60GBP, but he prefers to "save" the old prism. I'll see again how badly damaged my prism is, some minor chips wouldn't harm too much.

i sent you a PM when you had a wanted ad listed, did you ever get it? i think i have an extra M2 RF assembly. i'll look for it today and email you.

This is why I hang out here. :D

..................... Lots of good and positive people!

I just checked and I actually have a spare M3 RF assembly. I have no idea if it fits the M2 or not. It looks to be in good condition though.

You might want to contact Youxin Ye. He has been selling quite a few cameras recently with NOS M2 finders. He may still have some.

hmmm, no I didn't get a PM from you

New Old Stock

An item that has sat on the shelf for a very long time in it's original packaging or an unused state and didn't get sold.

Yes, exactly. I recently bought an M3 with one of the NOS M2 finders from him, and it is superb!

The M3 rangefinder is completely different and fits nothing else. There are even several types of M3 finder and they don't fit the same bodies!

I would get Peter Grisaffi to fix it - he is very careful over his work.

hmm, I dunno. people have made 'fake' MPs out of M2s and M3 finders, and M2 finders DO fit in M3s, so I guess in certain cases at least, the M3 finder will fit in an M2.

My M2's finder is half dead... so I'm also (somewhat) looking for a replacement finder (M2/3/4) if anyone else has one. I'd get mine re-silvered at CRR but I really can't afford to.

Not trying to take this thread OT or anything, but if Thijs is not interested, can I be second in line? I just bought an M3 with a completely separated VF.

it doesn't sound like it will even fit into an M2, so if you want it PM me and we'll work something out.

go ahead, I hope you can get that M3 working again:angel:

Thanks, Thijs. As it turns out, in my case, getting the VF prism re-cemented is the most sensible option. Replacing the complete RF assembly is neither necessary nor economical.

I don't want to speak for Bob but I assume the part is still available.

My understanding is that the only thing Leica can now do with a busted M3 RF is to mill out the body slightly and fit the M6J assembly. This isn't as good and the job costs about $1000.
