Ya.. because that's what they should be doing... not filling the umpteen M240 pre-orders that are still waiting to be fulfilled...

Well....
It does say that Panasonic is developing it (or Tweaking a current model)
A re-branded GX7 ?? with a tweaked sensor and Leica Firmware?? Is my guess...Oh Yeah. A RED DOT
They are 4 Leica/Pany m4/3 lenses already
(15mm f/1.8, 25mm f/1.4, 45mm f/2.8 Macro, 42.5 f/1.2 in the near future)...
Or build a NEW AF lens line... for the new camera? Doesn't seem cost effective. Even Leica looks at cost and RD.

I suspect that the camera engineers building this new camera are not the ones who are building the M240s

Rumor site fodder. Gotta keep those hits rolling in order to keep advertising rates up!

That's not a very reliable site but Leica is on the upswing and doing a less expensive DX option would be awesome.
I was wondering when this rumor would hit the site... I figured people learned their lesson after the whole "m-mini" rumor. Whatever they release will most likely be behind the times and too expensive for what you get. I can understand spending Leica money on a digital rangefinder if that is your absolute favorite camera type, but an AF APSC camera? Probably not.

By "less expensive DX option" do you mean a price hovering somewhere around 5K instead of 6K?

Yawn. My M3-MOT and M4-P are just fine as are my IIIf and If.
The Sony A7 is more interesting to me.

They say "SMH?" What does it mean? I just can't keep up with it all.

This caused an idea to pop in my head. Probably (definitely) not the first to think of it.
What if... logistics aside...
Leica made a new 35mm film camera? I think if it were cheap enough (equivalent to the used Leica RF market) they could bring a lot of people back to film by the sheer force of reputation. As far as practicalities, they could team up with Cosina and make something more affordable than the M7/MP.
I've never understood the appeal of their "lux" cameras. They've been substandard in most respects to their competitors. Has anyone done serious work with them, aside from their affiliated photographers?

Leica doesn't need or want to get people back to film
It's a business selling high quality and high price goods to people with a lot of disposable income. yes some pro's use it - but I'm guessing their bread is buttered by wealthy amateurs.
That said - Leica recently always had the consumer grade digital (although higher priced than the competition). I'm guessing if there is anything to this rumor, then they come out with a M43 body, either rebadged Panny, or their own design. They are already designing/making M43 lenses with Panasonic...

Might it have to do with Leica acquiring Sinar? Everyone here is talking about 35mm but why not think large format?

If you are watching Leica close enough, you will note that Leica is very active on Leica S format. That is the reason aquiring Sinar also. leica will not use Rodenstock or other "rebranded" optics in their Sinar / Leica for longer than necessary.

I don't know, even the fine digital Rodenstock lenses are a fraction of the price of the S-series lenses... plus Leica would have to develop a replacement for the Copal shutters and that would end up being very, very expensive.
I bet that they simply make a S-series digital back for a Sinar P3 camera, keep the status quo, and take the rest of the line off the market. Then they only need to wait for Hasselblad and Phase to implode and/or buy them on the cheap. I don't follow the industry but as casual observer I can't see how Hasselblad can keep going? Phase seems a bit stronger.

Leica should do what Rollex has done over the years.....take the same old innards and encrust it with jewels and expensive metals.

At the recent photoplus expo in New York, the Sinar stand had one of their made for digital cameras on a tripod with a Leica S as the digital back. It seemed like a slightly odd combo, but it makes sense given this news.
I think Leica now is the manufacturer with the broadest portfolio of formats. They cover most bases from digital compacts up to large format. Only perhaps Lomography sells more different formats.
