Well, an opportunity came up and I'll be leaving for Barcelona this Friday. That also means that very soon Oscar and I will meet personally there over a cup of coffee or lunch or something, including a photoshoot expedition to the Barceloneta area.

Shouldn't we start revealing where we are so we can meet at some point in the future, should our destiny take us there?

I live in DeKalb, IL, which is 65 miles W from Chicago. If you guys ever come to this neck of the woods, let me know! :)

sounds like fun - we want pics!!

i'm in western canada, edmonton, alberta to be exact. that's north of montana.

Wow, Francisco, that sounds great! Wonderful opportunity to see the sights! I've never been to Barcelona, but did enjoy a couple weeks near Málaga three years ago.

Going by the same landmark as Joe, I'm west of Montana, between Seattle and Spokane. :)

I think Bill was in my neck of the woods recently, or at least within a hundred miles or so. Bill, didn't you comment that your job won't be taking you traveling on that hectic schedule now?

It seems to me unusal for more than two forum members to find themselves in close proximity, given how widely scattered we are. If anyone's coming my way, drop me a line and I'll be glad to show you some scenery.

Ok, I'll reveal my location.

I'm in South East Iowa. I can't think of any reason why you would want to come here.

Wayne

A couple of years ago I went to SE IA, to a long conference in Iowa City, from July 2-5. It was there, in a fateful visit to University Camera, that I became a rangefinder man, because I had the chance to handle a Bessa R w/o lens, but I really liked the way the camera fit in my hands, its firmness and weight... And the viewfinder!

So, are you around that geographical location?

After watching the Iowa Hawkeyes basketball team lose again tonight, I am almost ashamed to admit that I did indeed go to the University of Iowa in Iowa City and did have an Insurance Agency there for a few years. I am now about 70 miles south and east of Iowa City. I bought my first SLR (Olympus OM-1) at the now defunct F-Stop camera store in Iowa City in 1974.

Well I was already sleeping when Francisco created this thread :D

I live in Sant Boi, a small city about 30 min. from Barcelona. If you're a basketball fan you may know Pau Gasol, another "Santboian". I have also family near Molina de Aragón (Guadalajara), Sevilla and in Extremadura too.

Let's see how the weather behaves this weekend, we're having the winter concentrated in a couple of weeks with snow last sunday... at sea level !

Hem... now that I think on this sunday meeting... which camera could I use ???

:p

Doug,

Sorry, I missed your post on this subject! Yes, I was in Seattle last week on my last assignment! I was a road-warrior, flying over 100,000 miles per year, home only 1 day per week. I wish we could have met up - but I was teaching and it tends to wear me out by the end of the day!

However, Friday was my last day with my company! I'm not unemployed, looking for a 'day job' where I don't have to travel. I've loved the travel, but I'm more than a bit worn out, and facing family and medical issues as a result of pushing my body so hard for so many years.

I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico, but I've lived in Omaha, Nebraska; Denver, Colorado; Racine & Kenosha, Wisconsin; and my family is originally from the Peoria/Pekin area of Illinois. I know that r-brian lives just a few miles from me, pity we haven't been able to connect.

I'm looking at some jobs now, it appears that my wife and I will be moving by the end of the month - perhaps to the southeast US. I'll let everyone know when/if it happens!

I also collect wristwatches, and I've been a member of a website not unlike this one called 'Timezone' for a long time. When I was flying so much for a living, we used to have get-togethers all over the place. I've met TZ'ers in Boulder, Colorado; Atlanta, Georgia, Washington DC and so on - it's been great being able to meet up with fellow watch collectors that I had chatted with on that board. If I was still doing the road-warrior gig, I'd love to do that with RFF members - but it looks like that part of my life is over for now!

Best Regards,

Bill Mattocks

Well, my stepmother lives in Darien, IL (we were there for Christmas). That's not too far away from you, and we'll probably find ourselves back that way again soon. I bought a lens for my Bessa R at Central Camera, what a great place! You guys have Calumet Camera out there too, right?

I grew up in little towns in central Illinois - I was born in Galesburg, we lived in the Quad Cities, Davenport, East Moline, and also further south, in Pekin, Morton, Deer Creek, and San Jose (that's Illinois, not California - and pronounced "San Joe's" not "San Ho-Say". Population 400. Salute!

It would be great if we could meet up some time in the future!

I currently live in Albuquerque, NM, but that's about to change - perhaps to the Southeast US. You never know where I'm going to pop up next!

Best Regards,

Bill Mattocks

I don't know much about SE Iowa, but if it's anywhere near Cincinnati, that part of the country is beautiful! My wife and I took a week's vacation two summers ago and drove down the Ohio Valley from Columbus to Cincinnati and into Kentucky - lovely! I believe that Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky all come together about there - is that your area? If so, great place, great landscapes!

Best Regards,

Hi Bill,

Um, Iowa is west of the Mississippi, I think you are thinking of Ohio. That area is indeed pretty interesting. Iowa has cornfields one year then soybean fields the next.

Wayne

San Francisco, California here.

Grew up in Sweden.
Moved around a bit through work (Denmark, Norway, Finland, England, Belgium and France).

Came to the US in '96. Lived in Chicago, worked in Chicago, L.A. Corpus Christi. Moved to California in 2000 or so and stopped travelling.

For now.

If you look north of Minneapolis, Minnesota you'll see good old Thunder Bay, Ontario. Pretty area with amazing views of the largest freshwater lake in North America, Lake Superior. Had relatives living in Tucumcari, New Mexico for a few years so I know how pretty Albuquerque and area is. Also attend World of Outlaws sprint car races in Knoxville, Iowa often so I don't mind Iowa either. Everywhere has its own charm, it's only when we live in an area for a while that we tend to take it for granted and then of course everywhere else starts to seem more interesting. Just my take on things, but I find I just can't bring enough film for all the great scenery regardless of where we happen to travel.

Well, I saw 'My Life as a Dog' and my former employer is based in Malmo, Sweden. Does that count?

Hehehehehe.

So is it true that the Fins hate the Swedes?

Best Regards,

Bill Mattocks

Bill, I lived in Malmo during my university years (and I'm ashamed to admit that I never saw 'My life as a dog'...) :)

Nah Fins don't hate Swedes any more more than Candians hates Americans or any other hate-love relationship that neighbouring countries often have :)

And the meeting finally took place !!!

A great afternoon-evening enjoying Barcelona with by all means non imitable Francisco and his adorable wife Frances !

And of course there were also the pics :), let's see if my street shooting hyperfocal method works with the 35mm or you'll be facing the blurry Barcelona ;)

Hope to see you here soon thanks to that connection from your Hotel Francisco ! Go out there and shoot this wonderful city while some other ones are at work :D !

Evil note: he enjoyed A LOT the couple of rusky cameras I brought, I bet he's catching the russian camera flu in less than a month ! I liked even more his leicas though :p

Are you at Northern Illinois University? If so, that was the *first* university campus I ever visited and was planning on going there. I lived in Lyndon, Illinois at the time (it's so small it may not be on the map -- on the Rock River near Prophetstown -- yeah all the biggie places...)

Then lived in Arizona for ten years (Tempe mainly) until I met my wife while travelling in Norway. We moved to her home in Canada and I eventually became a Canadian citizen. We live in Port Credit, which is part of Mississauga, adjacent to Toronto, where I work. Close to upstate New York and to Michigan.

Cheers,
Gene
