Hello,
I am fairly new to RFF and I want to get off to a good start with what seems to be a great community. Is it appropriate for me to post a link to my personal ebay auction for an item related to RF photography (a 35mm film scanner)?
Thank you,
Michel

Why don't you simply put it in the classifieds here?

true, it would be a sort of advertisment. I guess the purpose would be to alert fellow RFF members that an item which may interest them is available outside of the classified section. I checked because it is allowed on the fredmiranda.com buy & sell forum. As to why not list it in the classifieds, as the seller, I want as large an audience as possible and I wouldn't want to list it here and on FM. Maybe I am being greedy
. I have seen this item go on the FM forum for very low compared to what it has been fetching on ebay. Since I want this to feed my GAS, I want top dollar.
Glad I checked.
Cheers,
Michel

I like to see references to RF things for sale or auction elsewhere. It also brings revenue to RFF if you post your item for sale elsewhere here. Nothing wrong with trying to sell to the broadest market possible IMHO.

In my experience, RFF community members are very trustworthy buyers and sellers. We "know" each other to some extent. I have had mostly good experiences on eBay but lately got one bad one, which really soured me to it. I still sell on eBay but for photo gear I try RFF first, and even post lower prices than I had hoped to get on eBay, because I'm selling to fellow rangefinder enthusiasts. It isn't always about getting top dollar...because what goes around, comes around. You sell to someone at a really good price (for them) and sooner or later you'll get a great deal here...usually for something you didn't think you needed or wanted, but you simply cannot resist!

One of the reasons for having a dedicated classified section was to get adverts off the main forum. I don't think there is a "written" rule which says you cannot point to your own ads but it is generally not done on RFF.
