RFF Vivian Maier Photo Contest

OK Folks,

RFF will have a Vivian Maier Photo Contest!

Shoot in Vivian's style.

Winner will be determined by RFF member votes.

Vivian used high end equipment of her day, so I am guessing she would be shooting digital today. Analog or digital are acceptable.

She shot Rollei Twin Lens Reflex 2 1/4 and 35mm Leica (among other cameras) so square or rectangular, B/W or color.

Selfies in her style are definitely allowed, not that you have to dress the part.

Vivian Maier style means emulating her style of shooting as best you can. RFF will vote (one vote per member) on the best Vivian style photo.

Old pics or new pics. No smartphone pics.

You may enter up to 20 pics. Any photo deemed inappropriate for any reason will be removed.

New members may enter the contest. However their vote for the winner will not count unless they have made 20 posts in the forum.

One vote per member - so choose your vote carefully. No changes will be made if you inadvertently vote for the wrong pic. Members may not vote for themselves. Votes are anonymous. The top 10 vote getters will be rated per their number of votes. Lobbying for votes in this forum or any other public venue will get your photos disqualified.

All photos and their copyrights are owned by the photographer. However by entering the contest, members are agreeing to allow RFF to use your photo to advertise RFF contest results for free.

RFF reserves the right to change contest rules without notice if there is sufficient reason, however we will aim not to do so.


Entry Submission ENDS November 1st. 1st Round Voting begins Nov 2 and ends November 15th. If the number of entries is large, the top 20% of vote getters will move on to the 2nd round of voting November 16th to November 30th.

Entries must be uploaded to the RFF Gallery in the Vivian Maier Contest. There are some nice pics in this thread, but posting in this thread does NOT enter you into the contest. That is what the contest gallery is for.

Perfect timing...I just found 60 rolls of 120 B&W film that I shot 50+ years ago with my TLR...gotta develop them then look for the winning shot...

Tomorrow, I'm planing to get to the Gallery in Toronto, were they have fresh prints from Maier's negatives...

Maier started with Brownie, switched to TLR and for another two decades to Leica and such. She also used movie cameras.

Personally, to me Maier style is not in square, but with picture were person on the street is taken close or very close and person on the picture isn't moving a lot. And because it is TLR pictures which are most known, the lens level is low.

I am interested!

The current rules are simply "B/W images shot in Vivian's Style." If by "Vivian's style" you include the fact that she shot on 120 with her Rollei, then those that do not may get a penalty but this is up to the wisdom of the crowds.

I originally thought it better to stipulate explicitly that it would be on 120 with a TLR but maybe this is better.

I knew she used a few Rolleiflexes (not just a T but that is the one that seems to be most associated with her from self portraits). I wasn't aware she used a Contarex or an Exakta Varex (an embossed IIa, I think). She certainly had good taste in gear, and must have made some sacrifices to procure such expensive kit back in the day on a nanny's income. I seem to recall from seeing the film that at one point she received some form of inheritance, which may have helped.

Inisting on square let alone a TLR or film will limit participation. I will of course try my Rolleiflex. I do take a lot of waist-level shots with 35mm. Maybe insisting on square crop is right....

Very clear. And I suggest that "emulating her style" is plenty to go on and can be interpreted as the contest participant likes without further narrowing down. The voters will decide....
