Got a GR1 a while back, and just recently got a chance to compare mine to a friend's GR1s. I noticed it was significantly harder to see the shutter speeds in the viewfinder in my copy. In fact, a lot of the time the shutter speed is missing altogether.
Is this a common issue?

This is a common issue ....
I had the same problem with a GR1s ..I sent it to Ricoh Japan where they took care of the problem ... cost about $125.00 ..They also replaced the LCD .

I got a GR1S with this issue, except almost nothing at all can be seen in the viewfinder unless the illumination is used. Unfortunately the shutter wont fire either, and the repair cost is astronomical, so it just sits in my dry box.

I had the same problem - sent it to Ricoh UK and had the viewfinder lamp replaced. Now works a treat...

Too bad there are no Ricoh repair centres in Canada. I'll see if I have a chance to send it to the US, and live with the problem for now.
