Robert Frank: The Americans

It has been very difficult to get this iconic, collectible book for the past few years. It is possible that there may be a reprint, as I see it available in hardcover brand-new from Amazon for $45. The paperback version of that (Scalo) edition was selling for more than that, in used condition, a few months ago. This may be a great opportunity to get your copy, brand new.

Thanks a lot for the HU! I've had my order for the paperback edition with Amazon.co.uk for some months without any actual progress, I hope this will acutally work out now 🙂

(I'm making 2007 my shoot-awfully-much-and-study-accomplished-photographers-year, so I've been harvesting from the fields of great photography since September)

Regards
Kjetil

A teacher of mine, many years ago, brought in an original edition. It was small, dog-eared and worn, but I would have given everything I had for that original copy.

Don't know if it is still in print or not but I bought these two books around the same time in the early 90's while building my library and part of my photographic "self-education": Robert Frank's "The Americans" and Henri Cartier-Bresson's "America in Passing". Although Frank's book was a specific project made on a Guggenheim grant, Cartier-Bresson's was a collection of images of America, some of which were from the same period. An interesting pair to compare. Very different moods.

I know that this question can be wrong in this post... but Im very interested to know if Louis Faurer, Helen Levitt, Walter Rosenblum or Arthur Leipzig have recent reprints of their books now. Here in Spain its impossible find a new book of these photographs, maybe there arent books actually of them...

Thank you. 😉

I love that book. They used to have a copy of it at the bookstore near me and I have looked through it countless times saying " next time I'm buying this!" Unfortunately I haven't seen a copy of it for months now. I guess I know why. Might have to order it online as well.

Rather than Amazon, I would take a look at some of the sites that specialize in used books, such as my favorite www.abebooks.com. I have picked up some great, out of print books from them. Alibris (www.alibris.com) and AddAll (www.addall.com) are also pretty good.

I checked out abebooks.com ... they had many copies of a book I have been looking for quite some time

William Claxton's Jazz Seen

good stuff

RF The Americans is a great example of the days when getting a Guggenheim meant something. HCB's America in Passing is one I'm still trying to get my hands on....for decent price!

David, Helen Levitt's Crosstown is a great book, her most complete retrospective. It was about $60 a couple of years ago, but has been out of print. It appears that amazon has them on stock again, for $150 😕
