I am very pleased with the results of Delta 100 and Ilfosol 3. Just purchased some more chemicals and couldn't resist a bottle of Adox Adonal (apparently made to the original Rodinal formula). The economy of 1+50 and my own curiosity got the better of me.

What can I expect in comparison?

Cheers - John

I just had a look on Vanbar's site.

Crikey ... they can only despatch it via Star Track Express for just under $40.00 😱

I bought some Rodinal from them a couple of years ago and it was nowhere near that amount for freight!

That sounds like a ripoff unless the postal regulations have changed. I haven't bought in a year or two as I stocked up and am still using my last litre of (genuine) Rodinal but I got mine from Les Porter and it cost nothing like that to deliver.
As an aside, I don't use it on HP5+. Results for me on that film are not as good as on FP4+ or Pan F.

I've dealt with Les a couple of times and the man is an absolute delight ... I may give him a ring and see what he can do!

Adonal, R09 one shot, Fomadon R09 new; all the same Rodinal.
The regular price in Europe for 500ml is around Eur. 12,00.

In general the developer is suitable for slow- and medium speed classical type emulsions.

For Delta 100 Ilfosol-3, DD-X , HC-110, Xtol, Tmax dev. , I think is a better choice.

Less effective speed, more grain, depending on dilution of both - maybe more acutance, and darker midtones.

It's not my favourite F+D combination, but neither is TMX + Rodinal, which lots of people love, but I could never, for instance, make TMX+Rodinal look like Chris Crawford does.

I usually use Rodinal 1:50 for Delta 100. Start with the recommended times for Rodinal on Ilford's data sheet for Delta 100. I tend to rate the film at EI 50 for sunny/contrasty outdoor scenes (I think those are not uncommon in Oz), EI 100 for controlled/studio lighting. Excellent sharpness, zero grain.

...or maybe I will try it with Delta 100? 🙂

John,
Rodinal is fine with ISO 100 films like FP4+ but seems to make HP5+ in particular quite grainy and Delta 3200 even more so. I generally use DDX for Delta 400 and HP5+.
I also have Prescysol EF which is a little more fiddly to mix but produces superb results and to my amazement you can mix different films in the same tank and develop for the same time regardless of ISO rating and they all come out looking really good. Les McLean put me onto this some time ago.

personally I use adinol at 1+50 to do delta 400 but rate it at 200 iso doing so.

I bought the adinol back when I was using neopan 400 but have moved to delta because I believe it is a more long term solution. without a scanner or condenser lenses to check, I cant say for sure but under a little lens the negatives look fine.

OT, but I'm not sure what the issue is with TMY-2 and Rodinal?

I haven't shot any Delta 100 in 35mm, but I do have some 4x5 which will test in Rodinal, Ilfosol 3, XTol and HC-110. I don't expect any problems with grain. 😀
