The other night I noticed a wet-looking patch on my kitchen counter, along the edge of the range. I thought it was spilled water, so I wiped it up.

Tonight it was back. This time I wiped it up more observantly, and noticed that it wasn't like water; it was thick, almost like honey, and brownish-tinted. I also noticed that it had eaten some of the pattern off the laminate countertop!

Examining further, I found it was dripping off the edge of the range hood, suggesting a source in the cabinet above... where I keep my film developing supplies. Uh-oh!

I took the bottles out of the cabinet and found that the source was the Rodinal bottle. The stuff somehow had eaten its way through the bottom of the plastic bottle, leaked out and soaked the surrounding carton, then leaked onto the bottom of the cabinet and made its way through the joints in the woodwork to drip down onto the surfaces below. (Good thing I don't do much cooking on my range top!)

So if you've just stocked up on Rodinal in case of future shortages, I suggest you check how it's stored! Keeping the bottles in a spare developing tray or glass dish probably wouldn't be a bad idea -- if it gets out, the stuff really makes a mess!
