Roger's (lensrental) new toy

this puts Roger in a very elite group as far as being able to adjust lenses optically in this country.

of course Im sure some people will come along and wonder what the point is and shouldn't you just shoot your lenses and then how such and such a brand makes lenses that are never decentered.

man I'd love to have every last one of my lenses adjusted on this machine.

So if you enjoy the fantasy that lenses are perfect, you don’t want to see this.

I think he said it all, right there.

This is the reason why I stick with second hand lenses. At the prices I pay, I am seldom disappointed. 😀

It is also why I don't use lens test site information as gospel for any particular lens. It is at best a guide line. There can be too much sample variation, as Roger in his prior article has shown. A lens w/ the best score could be only average because of issue such as decentering. One of the interesting things that did surprise me was that Roger said that lenses that have back from manufacturer XX repair facility sometimes ended badly decentered. That they don't rent out lenses that don't met some minimum spec.

This why I only believe what I c from my own shots. If it is good enough for my needs.. Manufacturing tolerences and quality control play a part in this issue.. U get what u pay for. But that doesn't mean u are not going to c this type of issue w/ a really expensive lens unless that manufacturer goes thru process of testing every lens as opposed to using sampling methods to keep cost down.

reviews have always had a sample size of 1. but to be fair, the better reviewers are able to measure centering and have been able to since the days that pop photo was testing on tech pan.
