rollei r3 in rodinal - "clear base"???

Hi

SO yesterday i developed my first rollei r3. I had only rodinal and diafine in the house so i followed the rodinal 1+25 12 min recipee. (120 format exposed 6x9 in a Fujica.)
Well, the result is drying but ot looks like ***p. It is very thin in most cases, with very high contrast. I used an incident meter so the exposure should be fine.
Did anybody try this combination?
Additionally, i've read that r3 has a "clear base". (that's one of the reasons why i wanted to try it.) Well, mine has a dense dense uniformly gray base. (Uniformly thus it is not some fogging or light leak.) It is ugly dense gray, much more than any other film i've shot.
Did i do stg totally wrong or did i misread the sheets or did i get some dud or what?

Seems like your best option with this film is to use the special developers made for it.
In a thread on Flickr Robert "Fotohuis" says:
"A lot of other developers will create crap with this film due to the fact they will stay on the surface."

yea but if i'm not mistaken, it is exactly the same post where he says you can do it with rodinal 1+25 (not 1+50).

What did you expose it at? Apparently above 400 is not a good candidate for development in Rodinal. But that would not explain the grey fog on the base which sounds more like an issue with fixing or an anti-halation layer.

i exposed at 400 e.i.

I have checked my fixer right now, it is used but still good, clears the film in about 2 minutes. (Not the r3 film. Another one. 🙂 )
I'm going to develop a roll of efke25 today using the same chemistry to see if it makes a difference.

Looks like your fixer is OK.
Robert "Fotohuis" seems pretty knowledgeable about R3 film, maybe he will join in the thread or you could contact him directly.

Very curious about this. I have a dozen 35mm rolls of R3. Don't really want to get into special chemistry but, would like to give it a go. Have seen some great results with R3.

R3 is a Traffic Surveillance (TSF) Film which needs a pre-soak of at least 2 minutes and a depth developer who will penetrate deep in the emulsion. In that way Rodinal is not very suitable for this film. However clear base should be a clear base, more or less independent of the developer. If R3 gives a greyish result something is not OK with the film.

The best results you will get up from iso 400 with AM74/RHS with 1+7 or 1+9 dilution. For slow speed applications CG512/RLS on 24 degrees C up from iso 50-iso 200. It's a metol based depth developer from Udo Raffay, the German chemist.
AM74 is from Jaap van Beugen, Amaloco photochemicals the Netherlands. Because the OP is from Holland here the link for AM74 in Dutch:

The precessor of R3 was Cube 400C based on blue polyester and not equipped with non-curling layers. Therefore R3 is an expensive made film, made on clear polyester layer and double non-curling layer and therefore nice flat for scan applications.
R3 has been partial made by Filmotec (former OrWo) and due to the high production costs the Rollei R3 film will be discontinued.
