Apropos title for this set, as no matter what road I took on this country jaunt, I kept coming back to where I'd been before.
I really need to take my topo atlas with me on these trips, as I was trying to find a road that went over the mountains to Covington, VA. I was hoping to find places with great views of the valleys below, but wound up mostly just in the valley. And it was kind of a last minute decision, since the weather for the next day was not forecast to be very nice.
I headed north from Roanoke on US 220 through Botetourt County, VA, figuring anything past Eagle Rock would fit my plan. But that's where I should have turned. Oh well, save that one for another day.
I turned off the highway where Price's Bluff Road split off to the left. I liked the sound of that, and I wasn't disappointed. The crest of the road is just below the top of the bluff, and has a view that you only get when the leaves are gone from the trees, as it's gotten a bit overgrown. But it was fantastic, even with the 35MPH wind at my back that threatened to blow me over the guardrail.
So, Price's Bluff ends in a Tee with Locust Bottom Road, at a little country cemetery, and I took the right leg. Wound up back out on US 220. Not bad, as I wanted to take a road on the left a mile or two north of there just before crossing the James River headwaters. It's called Glen Wilton Road, and after taking the little jaunt across the river to the Glen, I came back out to the tee, and took a right.
It followed the river for a ways, made a 90 degree left, and came out on...Locust Bottom. Right back at the cemetery. Well, the film was all shot, so I just headed back to US 220, and Roanoke to drop it off at the lab.
