This summer, I fulfilled a long-held wish and went on a tour around the Baltic Sea with my wife. We travelled by car for more than five weeks and visited a total of eight countries: Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland. We often drove close to the coast, but occasionally ventured inland as well.

Only now am I getting around to reviewing and organising the photos. Every now and then, I upload a few new pictures here. I took the photographs with a Leica M6 and a Summicron 35 mm lens. In addition, I shot some 6x6 images with the Minolta Autocord TLR. The films are a plentiful mix: from Kodak Gold 200 to Foma 100 and Kodak Tri-X. Some of them had even expired, which you can see in a few of the pictures. 😉

Greifswald is a university town located on the the Baltic coast in northeastern Germany.

Rügen, our next stop, is Germany’s largest island, located in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It is known for its chalk cliffs in particulary, but also its seaside resorts like Binz and Sellin.

This sounds damn cool, but I just told my wife about your journey and she was like "uh oh ok". Guess this means no long road trips for us 😉

Last one has some very nice painterly qualities, but those BWs won my heart.
Thank you, Jan! For me, it was actually the longest road trip I've taken so far! But as they say, the Baltic Sea is one of the smallest seas in the world. 😉

I typically shoot in black and white, but on this trip, I wanted to do more color photography as well. And perhaps I felt inspired by Caspar David Friedrich, who is known for his landscapes paintings featuring contemplative figures set against dramatic natural scenery, including the chalk cliffs of Rügen.

Wow, eight countries in five weeks, in a car, with your wife. Epic. My wife would never sit with me that long in a car for a road trip.
The gearhead in me wants to ask, what kind of car, how were the roads and what kind of mileage did the car get? How many kilometers total was it?
The pictures are great and I'm getting to see places I'll never visit so thanks for sharing your trip.

Thank you for your kind words. The total distance was around 5000 km (3100 miles) and the roads were usually in a good condition - execpt for some bumpy roads that we took to get to our holiday apartments (like in Sweden or in Estonia). As a German, it is really fascinating for me to see that all countries have strict highway speed limits apart from Germany, where it is not that common. Actually, that made the trip even more enjoyable! We have not a particular fancy car, which is a Toyota Verso-S, but I like it a lot for its size and reliability.

After visiting Rügen, our journey took us to Darß-Zingst, which is a peninsula on Germany's Baltic Sea coast between Rostock and Stralsund. We went on a short walk in the north-west of the island near Prerow.

Our final stop in Germany took us to Rostock, a historical Henseatic city in northeastern Germany.
