S1119 Hood

Bought an S1119 hood off ebay (thanks Honu-Hugger!) and it looks great on my Sonnar 50/1.5

Hoping to take the kit out this week to see if the hood helps with some of the lack in contrast that I noticed on the first two test rolls through the Contax IIIa.

This makes me think if the postwar contaxes were designed to be supported physically by the rim of the lens hood... With the 50/1.5 sonnar it is nose-heavy. If i put it down like you did, but without the hood, it is very close to being out of balance and tips forward if a butterfly farts. Especially when focused close.

I put a 5-10mm strip of skateboard/ stair/ step tape around the outide lip of my lenses to protect the finish.

I should also add that the perspective in photo 1 does make the hood look a tad bigger than it is.

Funny, I've always thought that the 1119 S & 1115 A looked disproportionately large on a Contax IIa or II, but I guess they're not so bad on the bigger IIIa or III. External aesthetics aside, I decided early on that they block too much of the VF (not exactly huge to begin with) & use the Walz/Hoya/Kenko/generic 40.5mm vented hoods instead (w/no noticeable increase in flare as compared w/the ZI products).

Do you have haze or something in your Sonnar? It shouldn't be any less contrasty than any other lens of the same vintage (& should be *more* contrasty than the contemporary Leitz f/1.5 stuff). Perhaps you do more contre-jour shooting.
