Not that I'm in the market for this, but it's always nice to see a black S2. (no connection to the seller)

Now, if you look closely at pictures number 1 and 5, you can see the leather covering at the front of the camera peeling off. I wonder what could cause this. Could this be a case of the original leather covering having been removed and not correctly re-applied ? Any other factor that could make it come loose ?

This peeling off of the leather is quite normal on Nikon rangefinders. It is more a proof of original than of incorrectly replaced leather.

Very nice camera, btw.

Erik.

This is just the original covering glue having dried up over time.

Nothing strange. So now what should be done is to completely remove the covering, peel the dried-up glue off the body shell (and the backside of the covering), and rebond with a thin layer of casual neoprene glue.

I have owned several Nikon RFs and my 1958 S3, although not having been abused, had the same "problem" (which isn't any kind of actual problem IMO).

BTW onwards from the S2 the covering is vinyle not leather any longer.

Thank you guys for your input.

The info on the SP, S3 and S4 having a vinyle covering is new to me, thanks for pointing that out. I shall assume that vinyle was also used on the S3 2000 and SP 2005 reissue models.

You are assuming it right and the S2 is fully included in the Nikon RFs having a vinyle covering group.
