Many of you may have heard the sad news that Virginia Tech was the scene of a tragic shooting today. As of a few minutes ago, over 30 were reported dead, and over 20 more wounded. Virginia Tech is a college in Virginia, in the USA. Nestled in the southern Blue Ridge mountains in Virginia, it is normally a rather quite campus, just full of kids living the college experience, and if lucky, learning something too. They also have a Corps of Cadets. My oldest daughter was in the Corps of Cadets when she attended.

Haven't heard any other details from there.

My daughter told me a woman where she works has a son who attends there, and had a morning class in the classroom effected. He overslept and didn't make his class. Even so the mother is shook up.

Apparently at least on student got the sound of gunfire using his camera phone. I wonder if there will be more takes from camera phones.

Raid, I seem to remember you attended there too?

It will no doubt be in the news for several days. Just thought I would comment. My prayers are for the parents and family of all killed and wounded. Sorry it has happned, but sure glad it didn't happen while my daughter was there. I would have had a string of police cars trying hard to catch me as I roared down the highway.

i heard earlier when i was getting ready for work...

my heart and prayers go out to those familes with lost ones...

its just such a sad thing to hear and see the photos coming out of there...

Yes, a terrible event.

I listen to NPR during the day at work and there have be stories all day, many from students. The availability of cell phones is repeatedly being talked about as a source of good news, and accurate reports as every student has one it seems. Most importantly, students are able to call home, and information via email and texting is able to flow quickly.

The students I have heard have said the university has been very active with emails too keeping the students aware of what is happening/has happened.

I am sure there will be the usual laments over gun control, rather than disturbed people control.

Yeah, bad day for the gun nuts.
A disturbed person without a gun would have a hard time killing 30+ innocent people...

I was on a computer during class (for class related work) early this morning and noted that one person was shot, no deaths were confirmed. I came home to find the news that another THIRTY effin people died two hours after the first incident.

I'm not going to get political, but I sure hope that this effects gun laws; anybody wanna bet the NRA has a rally nearby the school within the next month?

I doubt that the NRA would want to have a rally there, although the locale may turn up in a future Michael Moore flick. Nobody in their right mind would want to be associated with this event.

I am saddened by the loss of those students and faculity. My heart goes out to the survivors and their families. I know of nothing that I can say to help them in this dire time. Just think of them and if you pray in your prayers.

students go to a campus to prepare themselves for life and find the end of their lives.
it so terrible that I cannot make any logic comment.
feeling sad

[SIZE=-1]Timothy McVeigh used a bomb. It isn't the weapon, but the mindset that kills.

I'm deeply saddened by this terrible event. I feel so bad for the students and family.

If it's not a sad day for everyone...then the "gun nuts" are not the ones with a problem.

These types of tragedies are so bad you need multiple lines of defense against them.

Gun laws, so weapons are not an impulse purchase.

-and-

Better health care for all, so mental health problems can be found, tracked, and the 'wack jobs' interdicted.

I'd be much happier seeing my tax money spent on these objectives than prolonging our crusade in Iraq indefinitly.

Yes, but of course some of the most notable gun related massacres in recent history have occured in countries with much tighter gun control than the USA: Scotland, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, and Australia. Check the facts if you don't believe me. This is not just an American or a gun problem.

When I was a kid in Texas anyone could walk into a hardware store and buy a handgun for a few dollars -- it was no big deal, no questions were asked, and kids were not committing mass murders. My personal theory on why this happens today is that so many young men today lack what taught men and boys in our generation how to live right and stay in line: A strong father in their life.

Yeah, the easy availablity of guns has nothing to do with
neverending incidents of gun violence and crime here;
it's really the permissive climate created by us liberals... ;)

Yes that's correct Chris. It turns out that a permissive "whatever-feels-good" laissez-faire attitude towards family life (started in the 60's), relationships, and personal responsibility has a profound effect on children (no smiley face).

I graduated from Virginia Tech, and my old department is adjacent to the dorms you see in the news flicks. This is a terrible incident for all involved parties, and the educational system may not be the same after it. Campus security and its affiliations with the FBI and Homeland Security will most likely be strengthened.

After a murder case at my current university, the police force was upgraded, with extensive security lights added across the campus and with police officers riding bicycles to reach areas that are hard/impossible to access via a car. My sincere condolences tothe families of the killed people.

What do you say, we agree to leave politics out of this to avoid a collision between an immoveable object and an irresistable force?

Fine with me -- we've had enough of that sort of thing here lately.
