I really appreciate your posting this. I like the slow build to the climax, and the postscript is nice too.

Thanks for the link...I'm interested to hear what Sam has to say about spelling.

Yes, that's a very interesting piece.
Those bison "skulls" sure look like fairly recently-killed "heads" to me.
The final image really is something. A dream. I'm glad to see the drafts that led to it. Makes me feel there is hope for making great images someday.

I'm wondering about the hit-rate he mentioned - eight published out of 25000 shots, almost 700 rolls of 36 exp transparency film?! Possibly he was exaggerating a little bit given the context, but a whole staff shooting like that would certainly have kept some film manufacturers happy! Given the skill of the guy, I'm sure there would have been a huge proportion of good pictures so perhaps 'hit-rate' would be the wrong term. For sure I'd have nightmares about the editing...

This one is also excellent, a talk he gave on release of his book "The Life of a Photograph"
I particulary took to the story of him shooting pears on a window sill looking out over Red Square, which took him a full day to shoot.
