In my view Leiter was one of the all-time greats. His photographic vision is outstanding, unique and beautiful. I have to say that I love color street photos myself especially ones with, reflections, distortions and lots of creativityour. His work does it in *****s.

Your choice. But the article is worth paying for to read, even for existing admirers. It's not a book review, but an analysis of Leiter's work in the context of other greats, such as HCB, Levitt and the New York School, with insights into how he fit into the scheme of the now completed legacy of mid-century street photography, and what made his vision unique. There are reasons why this article fits well under "Philosophy of Photography," yet it touches on the nuances of lens and film choice as well. Reading it enhanced my appreciation of Leiter's work, and there appears to be more of it yet to come from his estate.

Thanks for the heads-up, Peter. I'll read the article when it comes out in the July NYT Review of Books. In the meantime, I just ordered the retrospective book at Amazon. Its back-ordered, no indication of when the next batch will become available. I find Leiter's photography very inspirational and beautiful.

Maybe we should have a Bay Area photo book slam (show / tell) -- it would be interesting to share some of the books we're all looking at. Or maybe not, lest someone spill a beer on a vintage copy of The Decisive Moment.
