I am blissfully ignorant of film scanners. But, I guess I need to find out a bit. I am concerned about the following:

A. Possible compatibility problems with Microsoft Vista; and,
B. Ability to scan Xpan images

Are these non-problems, or not?

Thank you for any advice.

I can strongly recommend the Nikon Coolscan 9000. I have had it for six months, and it is a fantastic scanner. It is also a good idea to get a glass mount and/or wet mount for it. I use Vuescan to produce 16-bit linear TIFFs that I later adjust with ColorNeg (B&W, and color negative) and Adobe Camera RAW (color slides scanned as DNG files).

Thank you for your reply. Is Vista your computer's operating system? When you mount strips of 35mm film, can you designate panoramic negative sizes? Do you happen to know the answers to these issues if the scanner is the 8000?

Yes, Nikon Scan supports Vista, as does Vuescan. Your best option is to use the glass holder, specifically the FH-869GR. You will only be able to scan one frame at a time. I would imagine that the Coolscan 8000 will work just as well. It uses the same glass holders.
