Scanner recomendations.

Hello,
I have an old P2 450 computer connected to a Nokia monitor that has a built in USB hub(older USB 1.0 or 1.1) I really need a scanner but I don't want to purchase a new computer at this time. (purchasing the G1 really zapped the budget.)

I was wondering if someone could recommend a good inexpensive flatbed scanner that is compatible with an old system like this. I have been looking at the Canoscan 5000f, but see that it is USB 2.0 just wondering if the 2.0 connector and the canon software are compatible with windows 98. Any info greatly appreciated.

USB 2 is backward compatible with 1.1.. One of my systems is running 98se because of a weird Polaroid printer I have. According to the Canon web site -- "Windows: Windows 98: USB 2.0 Full Speed ( USB 1.1 equivalent), 233 MHz/64 MB RAM (128 MB RAM recommended)"
It should work.. I'm looking for a scanner to do 35mm and 2 1/4.. I have'nt picked one yet.. You might look here-- http://www.photo-i.co.uk/

I have a Canon Lide 50 running on USB 1.1 with no problems. It is a terrific flatbed if you don't need transparency or negative scanning and comes with PS Elements 2 for under $100.00 if it is still available.

I had a Canon 1220U that was running on USB 1.1 fine (which I am selling by the way) until I upgraded to a scanner that will accept up to 4x5 transparencies. It was in the past running on Win98, so backward compatiability shouldn't be an issue with it as long as there are drivers for W98.

I would imagine that the current USB 2.0 scanner is backward capability. Check the Canon web site and see if you can download drivers for W98. If so, good bet it will run just fine.

great suggestions, since my machine is so old, I wonder about the needed requirements. My p2 450MHZ might not meet the bill if connected to a modern scanner. My main intent is to scan the negatives for film and eventually slides. I've been looking at the Canon 5000f and the Epson 2400 both refurbed and for about 75.00 dollars shipped to my door.

I really enjoy the photo's submitted by the members here, I'd like to submit my own soon, anyway i'll just keep looking for a compatible scanner.

Thanks

I still use an old Epson 1240U Photo for documents, but it did fairly well with slides, negatives and prints, before I got the Minolta DS III. I saw one NIB on Ebay last month for $20. Good luck.

I ended up purchasing a refurbished from Epson, Big mistake.
The scanner came with the software CD's cracked in half and the film carrier the same. I downloaded the Twain and epson utility software but as I was afraid my machine, windows 98 is not compatible with their software (98SE,ME, 2000,XP) . So, im going to find some 98SE and try to upgrade my OS to accept the scanner Software and driver.:bang:
