I, like many, will soon be submitting Kodachrome to Dwayne's. I have never shot slide film before. Dwayne gives the mounting option by default. I will self scan in a Coolscan 5000. Aside from speed, is there an advantage to not mounting the slides? IOW, how much is the crop, and should I worry about variability of distance to the sensor?

I get my slides developed unmounted. But if I was using my last Kodachrome I would go for mounts as it would be my last chance for getting those iconic card mounts with the logo; assuming they still have those?

No logo from Dwaye's. I got my last roll back a few days ago. But back to the op's question. I used the trays that came with my V500, and found to my surprise that Kodachrome was much easier to scan than the other rolls of Elitechrome. I tried to use the histogram but it turned out that the auto setting was really the best. One of my last Kodachromes:
