I've been riding a Vespa for over two years now and shooting as I go, mostly with a digital camera of some sort but have wanted to shoot more black and white film on rides.
The picture taken on this particular day last July illustrates my priorities when it comes to scooters and cameras.
I was making this picture and didn't like the placement of the scooter. I walk over and set my Nikon D200 with a 28-70 2.8 Nikon zoom lens on the seat while I move the Vespa.
Notice the front wheel near the edge of the pavement.
I push the scooter off the centerstand and the weight shifts backwards a bit. The front wheel drops off the edge with a bounce and the camera starts to move on the seat.
I hesitate a moment processing what's happening and the front wheel turns a bit and the Vespa starts to lean away from me. The camera moves faster towards the edge of the seat and the Vespa continues earthwards. My brain says "pick one".
It's either the camera or the scooter, one of them is going to drop. I choose the camera, release my grip on the seat rail and grab the strap as the Vespa moves out from under the camera.
As with all motorcycle drops the first thing a good rider does is look around to see if anyone has witnessed the event.
Anyways, the scooter bears a small scar from the day and I learned to not set my camera on the seat when the scooter is moving.
