My Weston Master lightmeter isn't quite dead but now underexposes by 3-4 stops and my Gossen is dead as are the built in meters on a couple of 60's rangefinders. From various reports on the web it seems that many old photovoltaic (selenium) cell meters are dying due to failure of the sensors. Does anyone know of a source of spares or of a replacement material? I did consider fitting a CdS sensor or phototransistor and a battery into an old meter but haven't got round to this experiment yet.

Also any recommendations for a new meter, at the moment I am using my dSLR to meter but that is rather missing the point! The sunny sixteen rule is OK but has it's limitations.

Please excuse my ignorance of these venerable meters. When it comes to Weston Master meters, which model number is most preferred?

Mike, I'm still using a luna pro I got in 1972, yours shouldn't be dead. Have you tried replacing the batteries? You can't use the px 625or px 13 but there are replacements in wein cell batteries which are the same voltage and should give a year to two years of use. go to Fargo Enterprises Fargo Enterprises, Inc. to get
for the batteries, they are pretty inexpensive, I think about $4 or $5

I got a second Luna Pro on ebay about a year ago just to have as a spare. I don't remember what I paid but I think it was about $25, less than the cost of repair for the Weston quoted below.I tested both Luna Pros against my EOS DIGITAL meter and all three are on the mark. I like the luna pro, it is a very good, reliable meter. Anything which lasts for 35 years has to be good.

Thanks all. Megatron is exactly what I need, I'll send off my meter for repair rather than risk ebay lottery.

I can highly recommend Megatron, they are very kind and professional. I have had two Weston Master V repaired by Megatron.

III or higher. Below that... Calculator doesn't use ASA, but Weston #.

Between Weston Master V and Euro Master, what would you choose ?

This guy is THE guy to get to repair your old meters... I have had George fix two Master V's for me and they are great... better than new.

I'm not sure where you are located but I am located in Australia and George treated me very well and the distance wasn't an issue.

Have a look at this older RFF post:

Ruben...

Master V, I prefer the extra dial information.... the Master V has all aperture markings (ie.f1, 1.1, 1.2, 1.4,1.6,1.8,2 ...etc) where as the Euromaster has only the main aperture stops, probably not that great a use to most but I find it handy. There might also be a difference in the shutter speeds marked.... but I'm not sure on that as I don't own a Euromaster.

The only thing to keep in mind is that a Euromaster will be newer than any Master V and perhaps more likely to be in better working condition as far as the selenium cell... unless ofcourse you get it replaced by someone like Quality Light Metric! 🙂
