i know, i know. i think its always asked too, but i never get good answers. where can i find some series 5.5 drop in filters for my 40 summicron c? will i have to hunt for some used leitz ones? or does tiffen or some other filter brands make them. i thought i was fast enough for the set on here last week, but not fast enough i guess. im looking for a deep yellow or orange. maybe even red. thanks.

Tiffen does do special cut filters that they don't advertise about much. I don't know about that size though. Heliopan is another brand that offers many different sizes and series that are not generaly carried. I would ask the local stores if they can get them on special order.

If all else fails, you might try S.K. Grimes in Woonsocket, R.I. They are expensive and custom make stuff for photographers but just possibly might already have some Ser. 5.5 mounts already made, which should be less expensive than making them to order...

Their email: skgrimes@skgrimes.com

Obviously, if you have the time to look and are persistent, they might become available from, say, Tamarkin, Ritz Collectibles, KEH, Adorama or similar dealers...

In my opinion, the fastest way is to post free ads on such sites as the IDCC, LUG, MUG, photo.net, craigslist, etc.

They are not rare and, when you can find them, should be reasonably priced...The easiest to find would be UV or Sky...The others, for black-and-white work, might be hard to find, or unavailable...

But if you got the blank, you could have any good local optometrist cut red, yellow, green, orange, etc. filters, to the right size...[You would supply the glass].

dag has (or had last i checked) new old stock leitz yellow and red filters in series 5.5. i bought a set from him for a very reasonable price (way less than you'd spend on ebay). check it out: www.dagcamera.com. just email don and ask if he has any left.

I have one each of an old Ednalite 85 and 85A that I'm not using. (I think they may be for color film, which I've heard of but have never seen.) If you would like one or the other of them gratis, please PM me a postal address.

will i have to hunt for some used leitz ones? or does tiffen or some other filter brands make them.

There are Tiffen branded series 5.5 filters out there athough I dont think they still make them. Strangely enough Im fairly certain you will find that the Leitz series 5.5 filters are made by Tiffen. Firstly because most Leitz series 5.5 filters are made in the USA just like the Tiffen ones. Also that over half of the Leitz series 5.5 filters I have looked at exhibit a blistering of the single coating on them and surprise surprise so do the Tiffen ones! So bad is this problem that I wouldnt recommend getting either brand through any form of mail order sight unseen. Only get these brands if you have inspected them thoroughly first. The best brands to get are Heleopan and B+W (B+W being easier to find) This is all second hand of course. I see stores saying that they will get B+W's in by special order but whenever I have checked with the local B+W importer they say they dont make that size any more. I certainly havent ever seen a multi-coated one in any brand. So by and large search for them on Ebay. Remembering though that most just screw on regular 39mm filters. They dont screw in a the way and only hang on by a couple of threads but it seems to work if your not too rough and force anything. Good luck in your search.

thanks all. i have tried screwing on the 39s but hanging on by a thread is not enough for me. ill look around and see what i find.
