I've noticed that the Bessa III's hotshoe is a bit short. When I mount my Canon 430exII on it it does fire but the shoe mount overlaps a bit.
Are there any small flashes out there that have a shorter shoe mount?

I use the Nikon SB-30 with no problem. I'll check that and let you know.

The 430EXII does seem to work fine but, like I said, the shoe mount seems to be a bit too long for the hotshoe. I was going to look for a cheap and small flash for the Bessa but I'd like to know if there actually are any with a smaller shoe mount that fits the Bessa better.

I've finally checked the hot shoe and the flash protrudes a little (about 2.5mm) with no issues at all (photo taking wise).

The little SB-30 is high and flexible enough for the Bessa, including a diffuser... and it is pocketable for a decent price.

Ah, just like I though then. Like I said, no big deal as it seems to work fine. I still have to wonder, though, why they didn't put a regular sized hotshoe on the Bessa III. There would certainly be enough room on the top plate.
