Although I don't have my recently-acquired Mamiya working just yet, I have just spent the most fascinating couple hours dissasembling and just looking over the shutter mechanism.

I had no clue that they were this complex or this intricate! All of the little gears and wheels and whatzits in there, all so orderly. I spent about 1/2 hour just cocking and firing it and watching what does what. I admit I don't understand it all, but it's very intriguing.

With the plate off that controls the shutter speed, it seems to be kind of a cross between B and 1 sec. It stays open as long as you hold it and then times down a second and shuts when you release. With the plate on it goes from 1 sec to 1/500. It's obvious what happens at 1 sec, but at 1/500 it happens so fast. I never realized there was so much clockwork type stuff in there!

Anyway, for those who care, 🙂 I think I've found the real reason for the flaky shutter release. There is about 1/16" of "play" in the lens and shutter assembly. Something is loose in there. When I hold it clockwise it fires first time every time, but when I hold it counterclockwise it will not fire. I see now why pressing the release fast makes it go, but slowly will not. I'm currently inspecting it to see if there's any possible way I can get it tight without peeling back the leatherette and tearing out the whole shutter and lens assembly. It looks like I have it apart as far as it will go from the front.

Oh well, it looks encouraging, but still quite a way from the first test roll.

Film at 11! 🙂
