Well-known
Don't know about the S2 but my S with cloth shutter is about the loudest camera I own, it goes off with a solid THWAK.
My S2 is very load by RF standards. Loudest in my room actually by quite a distance. I don't have my Contax yet, but I had a Kiev that was as quiet as a Leica, pretty impressive.

Shutter noise is about the only negative I can think of about Nikon RFs.

I find that the S2's have distinct sounds. It is not loud by SLR standards, but to the user it sounds loud. My softest and quietest are the well used SP and the black S3 Millenium. Initially I thought it was not firing or "misfiring", but it was fine. The S2 has a different shutter assembly than the later cameras, which could explain why it is a bit louder. The S is probably just as loud, but it is so heavy that the sound is dampened by the mass.
Usually the "minters" tend to be the loudest, after you put some film through and everything is 'settled" in, they quiet down. Good reason for shooting a lot!

I've got $20 that says the Contax IIa will be the quietest.

it IS quiet.
it's quieter than the leica m3 and that was a quiet camera.

My Contax IIIa is quieter than the S2. The S3 with a cloth shutter is quieter than the Contax IIIa. The Titanum Foil SP's are louder than the Contax. The CLA'd M3's are quieter than the S3. The M3 is quieter than the Retina IIIS with its Compur shutter.

SP and S3 are quiet.
S2 goes KERTHUNK! It sounds nice, but it's loud.
My Kiev 2 is my quietest camera.

My S2 has the loudest shutter of all my RFs. The IIa and the III are considerably quiter. My M4s are quiet, but the MDa is the quitest (okay, not an RF).
> I'll be able to compare the S3 shutter soon .
Did someone we know get an S3-2000 for Valentine's Day????

Recently at my fatherinlaw's visitation and funeral, I took photos with a Contax IIa and no one noticed.
I could have used my M Leicas. I could not have used my Bessa R2 or Hexar RF in that situation to the same effect. Or the Nikon S I recently sold.
Sometimes it is important to use a quiet camera, though I totally agree that the photographer has to be/act "quiet" as well.

I can barely hear any of mine, too much shooting of live music in the 80's.

I just looked around, don't see any evidence of an expected S3.
And what is a sound pressure level meter?

OK, though I do want an S3, it is going on the list of next year's dreams with an M2 w/Summaron.
