but ill ask anyway. the QL17's asa range stops at 800. i was thinking of shooting 1600 film. if im using my handheld meter. ill be setting everything manually for proper exposure. have you done this?

If you are setting the f stop and shutter speed manually according to your hand held meter reading, which is set at 1600 iso, you should be ok.

I shoot Delta 3200 at 1600 or 3200 all the time.

Sometimes I take a few sample readings with the meter, (iso set at 800) then set it on manual opened up a stop or slowed down a shutter speed, or two.

I just guess on the exposure most of the time. I lose a few shots with this method, but hey, it's all in good fun.

If the camera ASA is set to 800 and you are shooting Delta @ 1600 or 3200, then opening up is going the wrong way.

I always get that wrong:bang:

What I meant was: If set at 800, you get a reading of f2.8@1/60, you set camera manually at f2.8@1/125 for 1600 or f2.8@1/250 for 3200. You can use your meter and then reset for an equivalent exposure depending on the speed film you're shooting.
I decide what speed to shoot at based on my meter readings. I usually shoot in dark bars and f1.7@1/30 and 3200 is the best I can do.
If my meter tells me that at 800 all I can shoot f1.7@1/8, but I need at least 1/30, I set it where I want and try to remember to develop the film at 3200. 🙂
