I was meaning to get the new silver 28mm summicron asph upon hearing the news of its release but I didnt know that production was limited to 500 pieces. It seems that no online retailer has one in stock.... There is a local shop in Orange County but I'm sure the price is pretty spendy + tax.

Does anybody know of an online vendor who may have one in stock?

You may be interested to know Leica didn't make this one from brass. It is the same weight as the black chrome version.

They did a beautiful job; I have a number if silver lenses and it looks the precisely same - other than its reasonably light weight, you would never know it wasn't brass underneath.

Yeah,

Yeah,

I realize its chrome. I'm just a sucker for shiny things. I wonder how the finish will wear... The whole light weight thing isnt a bad thing for me. I have a 35mm summicron IV that I just love because of its light weight. I've also noticed that the lighter the lens the smoother the focusing action. The whole chrome/brass thing begins to get a bit excessive (I've got a chrome 50 lux asph that is a lot stiffer to focus when held horizontally vs vertically because of the weight of the front elements pinching the helicoids).

Anyways I'd love to hear how you like this lens and how you found its performance. I'm seriously on the fence on this one... I'm in Orange County (Irvine) too so regardless if I order through Popflash or my local store I'll be suffering about $300 in taxes... I guess the new rebate will take care of that but it still hurts.

I had a black 28mm Summicron I sold to buy the silver one - so I can already attest to its performance. I only made the switch because I bought the black one (new) when prices were substantially lower compared to what they are now. I'm a sucker for silver lenses!

So actually, I made out pretty well.
