I have Silver Efex Pro 2 installed for both Lightroom 4.2 and Photoshop CS6.
I have mostly only used SEP2 from Lightroom, which results in rather large TIFF files for every image that I process in SEP2.
This is rather annoying, as you have to delete each TIFF if you decide not to use it.
But what I noticed this evening however is that if you have a DNG file open in Photoshop CS6 and then start the SEP2 filter the file will stay as a DNG even when you apply (OK) the changes to the DNG from SEP2. The file will only be saved as a TIFF if you actually choose to (S)ave the file in Photoshop.
I wish it would be possible to open the file in SEP2 directly as a DNG from LR as well, rather than having to export to TIFF in advance. I often open the files in SEP2 and 70% of the time I won't use the edits from SEP2 anyway...
