Simple but not dumb digicam for 8 year old

I would first check if camera is something he really wants.
Usually it is someone else who wants kids learn technicalities instead of photography.

Actually, I would suggest mini Instax camera. Got one for my daughters. They learned very quickly not to waste shots. :)

Also, almost instant photograph lends to explain composition as they are still on location.

For my nine-year old granddaughter:

- She is quite excited by the Instax. Tangible object pops out of the camera, and they come in colors. Big enough it doesn't get lost. Regularly runs out of film; I periodically re-supply.

- Also quite interested in small digicam. For movies, and some stills. However, loses them readily, and requires help from Mom/Dad to get files off the camera onto iPad. I shop for $3 cameras at thrift store and she seems to enjoy each one.

I would suggest looking at a Canon PowerShot SD1000.
Small, but take really nice pictures. They can also do video too.
Not complicated either and the battery will last too.
