Thanks for the link. It comes at a personally opportune moment for me.
I have been on a household archaeology binge the past week or two, digging through some water-damaged boxes of old prints, negatives, chromes and contact sheets. The past two days I've come across some contact sheets for which I've haven't located the negatives. Taking a cue from Al Kaplan, who is very fond of scanning from ancient contact sheets, I've taken to doing the same. This is a mixed bag. Some of the sheets are damaged from a basement flood, so the quality can be spotty (both literally and figuratively), but the process is very satisfying. It's like recovering a long lost memory. Anyway, I am working my way through early to mid 1980's on my dig.
The process reminds me that, although there are things I love about digital, there's an awful lot of good stuff I have emotionally invested in film. So, I share Sarah Boxer's sentiments in the Slate piece.

Contact sheets! Blahh! The worst part of using 35mm. Never liked em. Don't miss em.

I started scanning from the contact sheets because they looked OK posted on my blog http://thepriceofsilver.blogspot.com and it was quick and easy. I still have all the negatives, sleeved and numbered to match the contact sheets. I'm also lazy.
I also like the "reality" those scans give to the images, complete with perforations and edge numbers. Now I'm planning on making a glass negative carrier for my Omega B-22 so I can make gelatin silver enlargements with the perforations showing.
It's good to know that push come to shove, a negative comes up missing, you can still print the image salvaged from the contact sheet.
