Hello Photographers,
what is your favorite and most compact 50mm?
Of course there is the collapsible Elmar but in working mode its about 4cm long as all the others.

Anyone know about a realy short 50mm?

Regards

I can't resist the urge to put a yellow filter and a hood on one so that defeats the purpose of a pancake I guess. My smallest one is the pancake for Pan F. Not a 50 but my favorite is the 35mm Elmar and it is such an excellent lens too.

Super Rokkor 2,8 is 45mm but very tiny and a super lens (no pun). I tried to insert a pic but this site doesnt give much leeway when inserting so it was too big a file. Also plus 1 for the CS 50..... onew of the best LTM's of any size.

No. Because all 50mm lenses are 50mm lenses. None is appreciably shorter than any other (for a given speed). The only way to shorten the lens is to reduce how far the barrel protrudes past the front element. In which case the Elmar is about as short and compact as they come.

So far as I know there are no telephoto 50mm lenses, which would be the only practical way to make a 50mm lens shorter than other 50mm lenses.

I have a 50mm Cron V.4 and a 50mm CV Color-Skopar. Lengths from mount to top of the lenses are (with hood retracted on the Cron and no hood on the CS):

CV - 27mm
Cron - 43mm

So as you can see, for a lens that only gives away half a stop the CV is very compact. It's also an excellent lens generally although not as sharp as the Cron at wider apertures. Hope this helps.

Ray,

Thanks for the post and pictures.

I just bought the 45/2.8 Super Rokkor without the lens caps. I like the size, the scalloped focus ring, and the rendering.

Mucho center sharpness, even wide open, but I wish the aperture had detents.

Actually, lenses can be physically shorter than their FL. The optical design class is termed "telephoto", which is not the same as the common jargon use of the term. With such lenses, the optical nodes are projected forward in the optical system. The "retrofocus" designs used in all wide angle lenses on SLRs that don't require mirror lockup is the same general optical design, only inverted to project the optical nodes rearward so that the rear element can clear the mirror.

True telephoto optical designs are generally used only for longer than "normal" focal lengths. Olympus did apply this short focal length telephoto in their XA. It allowed the lens, a 35mm FL, to be much closer to the film and kept the camera thin. The drawback of this design is that it is difficult to get a wide field that is evenly illuminated and sharp. The XA's corner performance suffers a bit when compared to the competing contemporary Rollei 35 series.

Color Skopar 50mm f2.5 is pretty much pure gold. Very small pancake lens. Not the smallest but small enough.
It is ltm. This thread is loaded with CS50 goodness 🙂

What Andy said^^^^^. The classic Leica Elmar 50/3.5 is not a pancake design, but is still very compact, although when fully extended may be longer than the Skopar. The Skopar is a brilliant lens.

Is there an advantage of this lens over the Elmar 3.5 or Summitar 2.0? Or are there any special qualities that make it stand out? Sorry for reopening this thread. . .
