June 1 was the day that the R-D 1 firmware update was supposed to be available for download from Epson UK.

Who's going to be first to take the plunge, assuming the plunge CAN be taken?

I checked the UK support site today in hopes of some early info (there was none) but was mildly nonplussed to read an FAQ item about firmware updates which said the firmware is updatable, but "only an Epson technician can do it." I hope this was outdated info...

It's already June 1st in the UK. I'd love to take one for the team, but I just got mine back yesterday. Anyone thinking of sending his/her R-D1 off to service anyway?

It's probably still a bit early.
Let's check later today; I am really confused if the camera needs to be send
to Epson or that I can do the upgrade myself.

How about that "only an Epson technician can do it" part? Do I have to send my R-D1 to HK? Just give me the update and I'll jab it onto an sd card.

What is the point of making the firmware available for download (as stated in the front page of the UK RD1 website) if only an Epson technician can do it?
It doesn 't make sense to me.

As Sherlock Holmes said to Watson. "It is futile to speculate in advance of the information" ;)

But, boy, do humans love to do it.!! :bang: :bang:

Ah but you can only speculate if you don't have the information, once the information is available you don't need to speculate anymore.

It's probably a warranty thing. Believe it or not, there probably is a very slim percentage of users, who while updating the firmware on the camera, the battery dies or something and it stops midway, messing things up. Epson is probably just covering their ....

Can somebody please post (or mail) an exact link.
I have been searching the whole Epson site but I can't find a word
about the upgrade.
Thanks.

Thank you, Lucyinparis! I had been checking the regular Epson Europe downloads page to no avail!

Now to decide whether to jump in and try it... or be prudent and let others be the first...

"The ‘multi-shot’ function has been improved by increased the number of successive shots from 2 to 3. "

What is the multi-shot function? Is that referring to the RAW buffer size?

Robin.

Eric,

"Settings" is the only thing normally accessible if you have no images on the card isn't it?

I just installled firmware and everything appears to work as advertized.
Eric -when you are in settings -check LCD brightness as confirmation.
once done the jog wheel works as normal.

Keith, rfm,

You are both correct. :D

After installing the Firmware, which was nice and straight forward, I reformatted the SD card and then re-tried the menus without taking another shot.
I have just taken a shot and all is perfect.

Thanks to both of you, many thanks to Epson for making this Firmware upgrade available, and of course Lucy for finding it. :D

Cheers
Eric.

Firmware works great, even with my 2 gig card.

review setting (e.g. histogram display) is maintained when camera is shut off and turned on.

histogram display is much nicer - it is in lower right corner now and doesn't block the whole image

RAW+JPG works fine, but when you delete an image, it ALWAYS displays a message telling you that it will delete both and you have to press delete again!

I forgot to take a test image at ISO 1600 for comparison - they promise lower noise - and to see if it is in RAW or just JPG. If someone out there can do this before upgrading, we'd all appreciate it!

Quick review works great but is picture only, not info display as selected (e.g. histogram) so you now have to wait until quick review is done, then press the LCD button, to see the histogram. I'll probably leave the review off because of that.
