would it be the same one as for the old slr cams?

I'm not sure. A cable release that fits a Nikon F or F2 will fit a rangefinder. Screws into the threads inside the shutter release collar.

You can use the soft release for the old Nikon SLRs that had male threaded releases. See here http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=36267&d=1163708388 .
I hope that works.

Somehow I knew that Brian would have the model number of the release you were looking for Joe. That is exactly what is on my S2.

You can pick them up on evilBay at a resonable cost. I got one for $10 with shipping from the UK to go on my S2 I was looking for an AR-9 (just the top for my M6) the other day and sad to say, getting it from evilBay was faster (none in stock anywhere near me).

yeah, that's the one.
i wasn't sure if the rf would accept it too.
i think i can find a knock off copy locally to try out.
i find the release on the s2 a touch longer than what i'm used to and so i missed a couple of shots on the weekend.
thanks all.

Joe,
Glad you found an AR-1, I was sure I had one, but could not find it immediately. I was just writing you a PM to tell you I had one that I could send you, when I read your post.
As for the grumpy part, you have been very good natured since you received your S2! But before that...

I did pick up a handful of black and chrome copies of the AR-1 while in Tokyo in 2005. They are good and so is the AR-1, but they do have a proplem insofar that they are taller than needed. On a F they raise the release high enough to have the finger clear the prism, while of Rf's they tend to catch on things in the bag or on the second body'd strap (joe, note the 2nd body reference - just for future thoughts!).
I have been playing around with a design that would reduce the height by about 30% and also have a dome shaped release. The cup type release forces your finger to push straight down whilst the dome allows you to "hook" the finger over the release. Unfortunately the NikonRf release is more complex than something like my M Softie. You need the collar, a lock ring and spring loaded return as well as the actual release button.
When I have some time I will pursue this further. Could of course be an item for the NHS meeting in Vancouver next year. Special engraving and all that!

you are as bad as the rest of them tom! lol
if money permits sometime in the future i would like to try an nice user sp. then i could have a body for the 28 and the 50, so much easier than changing lenses

Hey, Joe!
(good title for a song btw)
Would that AR-1 fit my F3? Gonna have to find me one, too!

AR-1 does not fit the F3. The F3 has the more common "hole in shutter release" type...Tom A's softie fits
