Why do we buy or lust after all those expensive lenses. Of course - some have super speed, some have interesting signature, some are sharper than others. I've too fallen in that trap - and often I'm happy that I did, as I really like my lenses. However, in some cases, I still wonder, why I bothered? Could I really not be able to make most of the pictures i did with much cheaper lens? After all, some people do it all the time. And have done it all their life.
So, when I feel that way, I test this theory. I take my old, scratched up Industar 22 50/3.5 collapsable lens and take it for a spin.
And here are the results (all shots are wide open at f3.5):
