I just picked up a copy of this having managed to get it cheaply - the store gave me a $50 discount and I had $200 in vouchers from a special offer the store was running a couple of months before. So I got a $400 AUD lens for $150 out of pocket. And boy is it good. The moment I tried it on my NEX 5 I could see the difference on its LCD screen. Noticeably much sharper across the field than the 18-55mm kit lens. I originally bought the NEX to use with legacy lenses but was a bit disappointed that the lenses that came with it were very ordinary in my opinion. There are times when one needs an AF lens. The zoom was OK if shot stopped down to f8 but is nothing really to brag about. This 50mm is different - it really is a very sharp lens from about f4 and quite sharp wide open. I will post some images when I have a chance. Any others tried this?

Click on the blur index graph to bring up the interactive version then try sliding the aperture slider up the scale to f4 and beyond to see what I mean.Or go direct to it here http://slrgear.com/reviews/zproducts/sony50f18e/tloader.htm
The 18 -55mm review is here http://slrgear.com/reviews/showproduct.php/product/1345/cat/83 and you can immediately see the large increase in blur in the graph compared with the prime lens.

Which store was this, just so I know to keep my eye on them?

This is good to know, I'm really not impressed by the kit lens either. Like you say sometimes you need an autofocus lens. Been thinking about the Zeiss 24 for E mount, but it is a little over US $1,000.

The obvious reason to get this lens is AF. Otherwise I dont think it is worth the 200+ € premium over any other manual 50/1.8 (most of them will be more compact too).

Another reason to get the Sony 50 is the built-in stabilization.

There is that. I'm farsighted so have to hold the camera out anyway, the stabilization helps.
