I'll be in England for some hiking in the Lake District this summer. Checked online for film to purchase in Mnachester, UK, rather than lugging it across the pond. I was shocked to see that the prices are so high - 4.95 pounds for a roll of Delta400 120 size at Jessops vs. 4.45 dollars at B&H in NYC! That's 50% more if you factor in the exchange rate. Are there cheaper alternatives in the UK or should I leave room in my carry-on for the film?

You are unlikely to actually get film by going into a Jessops. You can get it a little cheaper than that from other places but you are probably best bringng your own- film is a little more expensive here unfortunately!

Ilford films tend to be expensive in UK. Kodak TriX and TMax are still reasonable. Try Ag photographics (based in Birmingam, UK) - they are very fast and keep fresh stock.

Dude - if you can, buy your film in the States. Don't even bother getting it in the UK, or consider buying in 7dayshop.com - that's the cheapest. Otherwise, be prepared to handle ridiculous prices... :/

It's also pretty expensive where I live (in the middle of Germany) and what's really a nuisance is the price for the developing!

Welcome here outside country where dollars are printed!

One possibility would be to either bring your own film - but check how many rolls you can take into EU without being suspect as a grey importer. Another possibility is to check if there are appropriate film choices online, in EU shops. Say, macodirect.de has Delta 400 in 120 for a bit less than eur5 - not a big saving, though, but cheaper than gbp5. Check shipping to UK and see if it's worth it. If you choose to order from them (or any other EU web shop), package can be directed to place of your stay even before you depart from U.S. - but this is worth only if you can not bring through customs amount of film you need.

Well 120 tri-x is cheeper from process supplies and I prefer to deal with a company that I can walk in to.
