Spotting collector editions in shops.

I'm curious about availability of collector edition Leica equipment.

I wouldn't expect to see - readily available in Melbourne - things like the LHSA MP grey hammertone anniversary model (production run of 1000?), or quantities of the SUMMILUX-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH.

There's a hammer tone MP kit in each of the main Leica shops and I counted five of AUS$4000 Summilux lenses on the shelves; and a few months ago there was a Golden M6 Thailand special under glass. My assumtion is obviously wrong - that our corner of the globe wouldn't have the market to support this sort of stock holding.

How often do you spot this sort of gear in your area?

Here in Perth I'm surprised when I see a Leica M in a store let alone anything exotic. To be fair there is one store in the city that has something other than the usual M7 & MP in stock... a M6 Titanium with matching finish 50/1.4 & 35/1.4. They also has the chrome M6 that was used in the aussie movie "Japanese Story", the box and bottom plate is signed by the actors from what I can see thru the shop window, I noticed they had it listed on ebay for a short while for $20,000 from memory, no takers.

here in edmonton, we have one shop that carries leica and it has one mp in the display case and a couple of lenses. nothing too fancy...

I have to admit I often don't even look. :-( The photo store I visit most is a 1hr lab, a local branch of an outfit 30 miles away, and I've noted they have a few P&S cams in a small case. The main store is also a photo studio and they have a wider selection, often including interesting MF rigs. I noticed last week they had a Plaubel Makina in the showcase. I don't recall seeing Leicas there though.

Other camera shops have become computer stores or gone out of business... and I guess I contribute to that by shopping on the internet.

I had heard about Kenmore Camera in Seattle, so did stop in once last year when I was in the area to see what they had. Seems to me they had a good stock of Leica gear but I didn't notice if any were special editions.
