My wife does like me to take photos of her......but only when she has her makeup on and is dressed nicely.

She hates it when I do candid snaps around the house, with her in her pajamas, and her hair wrapped in a scarf or something. Of course I am usually just testing out a recent purchase or a new lens or something, and don't intend to "publish" those photos, he he.

What is the environment in YOUR house in regards candid snaps of the wife, or husband?

My favorite pics of my wife is when she is not all done up, you know when she is just being herself. Women don't understand that concept, of course I don't understand women so I guess were even 😀 .

My wife hates candid shots of her! She has been bugging me about removing the shot of her in Saigon after being stuck in the airport for a 7 hours delay in flight!

My wife isn't terribly keen on it, but she humors me. I return the favor by doing my best to stay on the back side of a camera to avoid scaring the poor lens... 😀

Todd,
After 53 years on earth and 3 marriages, I can safely say that a man shouldn't worry about "understanding women" - because they don't understand themselves either!!!!!!!

The only thing my wife likes less than having her picture taken, is me.

The only time I can get her not to cringe and raise her hand to the camera is when she is holding our son.

🙂 good question
With my girlfriend, there are just moments when she loves to pose. (Those pics tend to turn out below average, I know that in the moment of pressing the shutter release.)
Then there are moments when she hates being photographed, expressing this with grins, funny faces, sticking tongue out, or looking seriously angry (in which case i really have to stop!).
And there are some magic moments when she feels good and doesn't give a rat's ass if i look at her with one extra eye. It's not really related to how well she is dressed or makeup or such. These pics turn out to be the keepers.

here's a goodmorning shot

Oh, I understand that concept quite well. I also understand where she's coming from quite well. Unfortunately it's not that easy to explain in a way that some people (not to be sexist) 🙂 can easily understand. 🙂 {ducking, hiding}

We do tend to be very self-critical, and our society is very visual. Men tend to be less self-critical than women. From a personal perspective, I enjoy being behind the camera far more than being in front of it. I *hate* it when in some informal setting somebody pulls out a camera, points it my way, and starts shooting! 🙁 Even though others will say "oh you look just fine", I see every flaw. I swear that for 90% of the shapshots taken of me I look either old or stoned or like I just woke up in the morning. 🙁 That's about as close to a plain English explanation as I can give. I just don't like being photographed unless I have time to be sure I look just right, and even then I often don't like the way the camera captures me. 🙁

My suggestion is, first of all back off a bit. Don't push it. If you pull out a camera and she tells you she does not want to be photographed, then put the camera away. Wait for an opportunity when she's receptive. Then, let her know that she is in control of the situation, and that she has absolute "NO" power over anybody seeing any shot she doesn't like. Those are my suggestions.

I hope this helps. This is something I'm aware of from both sides of the lens, but it's not something that's easy to put in black and white, so to speak. 🙂

My wife doesn't mind informal snapshots if we are at a party or family gathering, but refuses to pose. I think for the reasons that dmr436 spelled out. She is much more critical of herself than I am. I think she's beautiful and often tell her so, but as yet I have not convinced her with photographic evidence that she is in fact easy on the eyes. I do occasionally sneak a shot that turns out well.

You gotta do what you gotta do...

You gotta do what you gotta do...

Mine hates it too but I told her it was useless to object because taking a jillion photos of the ones most important to me was gonna happen hell or high water. I've taken so many now that they don't even notice the cameras, especially the kids.

The shot below was from a recent Fomapan 100 test. Going for an 'oldschool' look shooting directly into the sun with a 40 year old single coated lens.

My girlfriends hated me, they abandoned me even before I could take the lens cap off 😀

Thomas, I agree, that's an outstanding portrait. Love yours as well Pherdi.
