oh crap!
my canon 100/4 lens is squeaking.
the last time i used it was a cold winter day, the shot of the 2 girls with the wrong way sign.
anyway, i took it out tonight to change hoods and of course i had to play abit and while turning the focus i heard a bit of a squeak, it's in the same place each time and it squeaks every tiime.
and the aperture ring feels stiffer, not really stiff, but stiffer than i remembered.
this is just temporary and will gone tomorrow morning, right?
maybe some olive oil... :bang:

Damn.
I hope that a little TLC and warmer temps will bring it back to quiet-tude.
Good luck.

It need a night under your pillow. Time to let the 35/2 sleep on its own Joe, the 100 needs attention.

soon.
i decided not to try to sell it when i bought (not yet received) those 2 older bottom feeders.
the plan is 2 kits
#1 will be a canon p w/ 35/2 - iv sb w/ 50/1.8 and the 85/2 in the bag
#2 will be a canon p w/ 35/2.5 - lll w/ 50/1.9 and the 100/4 in the bag
old and older

the snow must go on
i had a lens once that was doing the same. It was a bit dirty from outside, i guess from inside as well. Then, after a few days of occasionally playing with it, the squeaking noise disappeared. No problem since.
There's hope.

i'll keep it out and play with it while i'm on the computer, though that may wear it out completely...

but it's more scarey with one of my canon lenses...

Don't use lighter fluid. The lubricant might be washed away from the threads into who knows where. The newly naked threads won't squeak, but they will bind and feel very dry and tight. The grease might end up on the diaphragm blades or the glass. Not good. If you can see the threads from the back of the lens, a tiny drop of oil placed on the threads can be worked into where it's needed and the focusing will be smooth and noiseless once again.

The ONLY lens i would do the ronsonol trick on is one that the whole set of elements screws out from the body like the jupiter 9 and a few other 85-90mm lenses.
Otherwise I think one would be safest disassembling the lens carefuly then clean helicoids with the lighter fluid, then relube. Allow the lighter fluid to evaporate (10 minutes max) before lubing.
Use the hair dryer trick SEPERATELY from the lighter fluid, or PONTENTIAL BIG KABLOEEY can result.
We would like to keep you and your house in one piece.
