Deviant Art - Chris Weeks - CameraQuest Street Photography Contest

So I am waiting in line at Saint Starbucks and see this guy with a battered black paint Leica M6 TTL and equally battered 35/1.4 Sumi. The guy was wearing sun glasses inside at about 9AM, looking a little worse for wear, and maybe a bit of a hang over. So I asked the guy something like "Do you actually shoot it?" Turns out the answer is yes. He is Chris Weeks, one of the leading Hollywood celebrity photographers and probably the last substantial Leica M film photographer in Hollywood. Not to be confused with the papa-rat-si (misspelling intentional), the stars hire Chris to take the pics -- along with magazines, wire services, etc.

Anyway, we became friends. When not taking and selling pics, one of Chris's favorite net pastimes is DeviantArt.com -- owned by his friend Angelo. It was Chris' idea to have a Street Photography Contest with first prize being a gray Voigtlander Bessa R3A, 40/1.4 SC, LH-5 hood, side grip, deluxe strap, and MiniSoftRelease, and a roll of coveted APX 25, over $1100 of goodies. Chris did most of the ground work over the past four months, talking Angelo and myself into it, defining the contest rules etc, getting an impressive list of Contest judges, and writing the best article on Street Photography that I have ever seen (but be forewarned, it is written for the very spirited DeviantArt audience). File size due to lots of pics. High Speed ISP a good idea.

So read about the contest here http://news.deviantart.com/article/21794/

see contest entries at http://browse.deviantart.com/projects/contests/streetphotography/

and read the Street Photography Article here http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/38038974/

the contest ends November 30, 2006

Njoy and good luck in the contest,

Stephen

Interesting contest Stephen, thanks for letting us know.

I'm not familiar with Chris Weeks' work, but 10.3 MB download for his treatise on street photography?

Makes me long for HCB's trademark brevity 🙂

It's well worth the download man, it's a great aticle and Chris' work is very very good.

Bah, wish I lived somewhere where I could just bump into people like Chris in a Starbucks.

Restrictions: In PhotoShop you may only adjust contrast,
brightness, resize but not crop, adjust levels, adjust curves, strip
saturation, use custom channel mixing and layers for converting the
photo to black & white. No manipulations will be tolerated. Further,
if your photograph is converted to black and white from a digital or
analogue (e.g., film) colour photo you MUST detail every step of your
workflow of how you did your conversion.
No dodge'n'burn? Not even a little?

OK RFFers, I want to see at least 10 volunteers.
I don't publish my pix but I know at least of two dozen Photogs on this site from 4 continents.
All volunteers?? post a note here.

why bother. someone from dA will win anyhow. didn't you know that?! 😉

It's a DA contest. You have to be registered with DA to enter.

and even you can do that,
if you think your work is good enough to enter.

Did you complain that someone from RFF won the RFF contests?

As one of the judges, I can assure you that we will know NOT know whose pics we are judging.

As far all of the contest fine tuning questions in this thread, email Chris. hmm. I think he is fairly active in one other threads on RFF.

well i'm headed up to NYC next weekend with a new R3M and the trusty 1D(mk1).... i might see what i can grab.

after all, i haven't posted anything to my DevArt page in like 6 months i think!

i think you missed some of the goings on stephen. it was a joke because chris said (in his blog) that the dA photographers are way better than RFF photographers (which is funny as some are members of both). it was tongue in cheek...so ease down 🙂

and i am a member of dA btw. i just have not done anything with it, or uploaded any photos. the latter because i have yet to purchase a scanner.

This is great! I sure hope we can see some of the submissions on a regular basis.

I've been a member of dA since 2002 and even before having a REAL film camera and an RF. Chris Weeks is a nice fellow always happy to promote the use of rangefinders and of photographers using traditional methods. I might take part into the contest, if I manage to move my butt and soup those tri-x rolls. 🙂

I've had the surprise to have one of my photos selected as a "Daily Deviation" two days ago and I was quite surprised by the feedback!

It's here : "Girl in the Field" ---> http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/36160474/
