Street photos with 21mm

I've just seen, in Castro Bistro, Budapest (Hungary) some black and white work - street shots with very wide, at most 20-21 mm lenses. Each of them has a face(or two) close-up with lots of background. And lots of distertion, but that somehow fits the subject very well. Sorry, can't give references, forgot to ask the artist. But if you go there in these days you should take a look at it (and have some serb food in the meantime, they cook very well). It's on the Raday street.

Now that's a good site to have bookmarked, thanks for the link ! That guy is 21... and it took me up to 28 to realize I liked photography 😛

I like his work and have been visiting his site since he was 19. I'm jealous as I'm 48 and I'm nowhere near as good. He does produce some nice work. Hope I can manage something approaching this standard after I've visited the US later this year.

Don, it was originally going to be NYC, LA and Vegas as stated in one of my previous threads when i asked for shooting info from the RFF members.
However theres been a slight change but it's now booked as being:
Vegas - 5 days,
San Francisco - 5 days,
then I'm driving over 3 days (should be fun, I think) from San Fran to LA,
followed by 5 days there.

This will be late in the year however, Nov 27th - Dec 15th as we are going for our 25th wedding anniversary.

Hi Paul,

If you're driving from SF to LA, seriously consider taking Pacific Coast Highway (PCH)!!! It's one of the greatest scenic drives you'll find in California IMHO.

Actually Boston was included in your first post so I guess this means you're not coming here... 🙁

You're right I'm afraid Peter. We were going to visit Boston as we have friends there. They are now going to relocate to Spain so we dcided to stick to one side of the country. However I am planning on going to New York in April so may extend that visit to take in some other places, maybe including Boston.

A little pretentious in his dialog, perhaps, but some nice work regardless.

Pretentious is an understatement! 😉
I feel some of his images (Urban Portraits) are interesting and unique. His "documentary" work on America is mediocre at best. Why would someone travel from London to the U.S. and shoot people sleeping, passed out, or otherwise disinterested in him and then label them "isolated", "fragmented", and "artificial". I am sure he could have saved his money and found the same effect in Leeds. In some circles it is considered cowardess to shoot with a waist level finder (which he uses on a Canon G2 digital) instead of interacting with the subject, but how else could he avoid eye contact and prove his theory.
His opinions on America seem to come from an online magazine that is anti-American and a photo essay from the '50's by Robert Frank. If his intent was to "document" America, he ought come here without pretention, my guess would be that after a while he would eventually like it and move here.......just like the Swiss born Robert Frank.
This guy's prologue to his "people" in the urban America series reads like Jane Goodalls notes on gorillas, only less factual.
All that being said, it's a pretty cool site. Welcome to America James Wakefield, we welcome everyone like us or not.

His text does indicate that he has a high opinion of himself and perhaps rather rigid opinions of other cultures or societal systems but I think he can be forgiven that. He's apparently young and is probably being told that he's brilliant and it can go to your head. Being from that part of the world I like his 21mm pics from the north of England - I do think he's got an excellent eye.

Yes good eye and young to boot, and he has a website better than anything I could even attempt.........damnit 🙁

Well I had a very quick look at the source code and its generated by MSHTML so it was probably constructed in Microsoft Office and then exported into the mishmash of HTML and XML that Office creates. You could do that, no worries! 🙂

source code???? MSHTML??? ARRRRGHHH!!!!!
I could do that? Pullleeeeeeease 🙂
